OOMM: The Crossing Star (Frederick and Alec)

Frederick is leaning against the bar at the Crossing Star, idly watching the colorful bustle going on around him, while the barkeep fetches his drink. It's rather busy tonight, the sort of night when you could think you saw someone you recognized, then quickly lose track of them. Which has happened to Frederick more than once already, as his glance has been darting around—there are always too many faces in a place like this that are at least somewhat familiar to him.

He's here alone tonight. No one at Dawnbright seemed to want to come with him.

Frederick eyes him for a few moments, still fiddling with his gloves. If this astromancer is one of Blight's followers, he's an incredibly careless one, so that hardly seems likely. Still, he shows a certain lack of regard for what's been happening in England lately, and while Frederick is in no position to lecture anyone about taking these things seriously, he can't help realizing, in the back of his mind, that he's basically agreed to die for the cause-- more of a guarantee than a possibility, at this point.

A brief silence hangs in between them that's almost uncomfortable. Frederick's eyes slide around the rest of the tavern; he's vaguely tempted to excuse himself. But he doesn't.

Instead, he leans forward again, saying lightly, "You never know when one of the Queen's dogs might be lurking around. Of course, if you say something like that loudly enough, you might get yourself that interesting evening you were looking for. Though perhaps not a good time." He grins.

What he has here is likely a rather sheltered, just out of the house for his first time entering the adult world teenager who has all the grasp on politics that a clam would have on bicycles. That being said, unlike the clam he can learn from his mistakes. IE: an idiot.

The uncomfortable silence makes him squirm and slouch a bit more. There's a brief look of defiance at the mention of the Queen's dogs getting a hand on him, the cocky sort of the young before common sense kicks in.

"Mum would kill me if that happened."

[identity profile] knightofmercury.livejournal.com 2011-02-23 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Frederick laughs. "They might save your mum the trouble.

"It sounds as though perhaps this woman has sheltered you. Are you quite new to astromancy?"

By the looks of him, Frederick could believe that this young man was not much older than seventeen, which would of course mean that his powers had only recently awakened. Though his mother apparently knows something about it, which makes Frederick curious. Really, she should have taught this boy a thing or two about the way the world works.

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2011-02-23 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Gravely with perfect deadpan he says, "She'd bring me back and kill me again." Ah yes. The threats of mothers.

"Mum didn't think it was important for me to know those things. It's not like I'm going to live in the city or anything like that." He gives a shrug.

[identity profile] knightofmercury.livejournal.com 2011-02-23 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
"I see," Frederick says, still clearly amused. "What brings you to London then, if I might ask?"

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2011-02-23 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Da convinced mum that I should at least spend some time here. Maybe meet some nice young lady or what have you."

[identity profile] knightofmercury.livejournal.com 2011-02-24 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Is that so?" Frederick replies, with a bright smile. "Any luck so far in that regard?"

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2011-02-24 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
"No."

Sour look.

"And I don't wish to get married either."

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2011-02-24 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't see the attraction to it."

ie. Girls are icky.

[identity profile] knightofmercury.livejournal.com 2011-02-26 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well, now that's interesting. Frederick leans forward again.

"The attraction to what, specifically?" he asks, eyeing Alec. "Marriage? Or the company of a woman?"

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2011-02-26 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Marriage. Women. All of it." He slouches more.

[identity profile] knightofmercury.livejournal.com 2011-02-26 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Frederick laughs.

"What about romance?" he asks. "Does that disgust you?"

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2011-02-26 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Alexander frowns for a moment as he thinks about that one. He then gives a shrug. "I don't know. Never had to deal with it before."

At least he's honest.

[identity profile] knightofmercury.livejournal.com 2011-02-27 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Frederick folds his hands and rests his chin on top of his fingers, smiling in a way that's somehow both sweet and distinctly not-so-sweet.

"You do realize you can have it without either, don't you?" he purrs, in a low voice so as not to be heard by anyone not sitting at the table. "Marriage and women, I mean."

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2011-02-28 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
From the expression on Alec's face, it is clear that such a thought never ever crossed his mind.

At all.

"You can?"

[identity profile] knightofmercury.livejournal.com 2011-03-02 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
A slow grin spreads across Frederick's face.

"Of course you can."

He watches, and waits for that to sink in.

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2011-03-02 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
It takes a rather brief moment for it to do that.

"OH. oh. Well. Oh. Oh.. . "

[identity profile] knightofmercury.livejournal.com 2011-03-02 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Frederick leans onto one hand. He glances around a bit.

"I'd elaborate, but some of the details aren't considered fit for discussion among polite society. But I'm certain you catch my drift?"

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2011-03-02 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Deciding to go with it, because, well, it'd annoy people back home. It is clear, as he leans forward, that he really only has the vaguest idea of what he's doing though.

"Do you consider this polite company?"

[identity profile] knightofmercury.livejournal.com 2011-03-03 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
"I consider this a public setting," Frederick replies, glancing at various other patrons again.

"Should I consider you polite company?" he asks, amused and curious.

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2011-03-03 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Would I be more interesting if I wasn't?" Alec asks.

It's really new territory for him where they're going, but he's interested and curious. Fredrick seems nice enough, but he's never been known for his taste in any reality.

[identity profile] knightofmercury.livejournal.com 2011-03-05 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Polite society is rather boring, don't you think?"

Frederick knows exactly what Alec is asking, but he's going to toy with him a bit, dancing around the issue. He smiles innocently.

[identity profile] elementwizard.livejournal.com 2011-03-07 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Considering the people I've met in polite society lately, yes, I would have to say that is rather dull." Alec has had more than enough polite society since he's been in London and he's not been there very long at all.

[identity profile] knightofmercury.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Mm."

Frederick leans back in his chair, crossing his legs.

"So tell me, where are you staying currently?"
